Meeting in Santa Fe, New Mexico went well and the podcast is available under Fray Angelico Chavez Historical Library and Museum. Since the program, we have met with the Forestry Department in Ruidoso, NM. and the Forestry Department on the Mescalero Apache Reservation. Following our meeting I received information on a review that was completed, by a Forest Service retiree, on the devastating wild fires of 2012. 252 homes were lost in the fires. The 2012 experience and the forest conditions in this part of New Mexico amplifies the need for aggressive cooperative management following Nature's Way! We must focus on the individuality of forest communities, maintain health and vigor in each unit and maximize diversity. The book provdes details on Nature's Way and forest communities. Recent contacts with Michigan State University, resulted in scheduling a seminar with the Forestry Department during this fall semester and discussions with students in the Philosophy Department. We are looking forward to these opportunities. It also appears we will schedule a program with the Montcalm County Community College this spring.
Last week we established a contact with the Cherokee Nation, Department of Natural Resources, and are working on scheduling a program at a presentation on ethnobotany sponsored by the Nation's Department of Natural Resources.
Our recent visit with the District Ranger in Magdalena, NM. may offer an opportunity to develop some potential for a connection with the Navajo Alamo Reservation. The more people we can involve the greater the opportunity exists that we can make positive changes in the future management of our remaining valuable forests.
We are excited about returning to Michigan and rekindling our contacts with the Grand Traverse Band of the Ottawa and Chippewa Indians. Somehow we must find ways to re-emphasize the Traditional Native American Wisdom and understanding of NATURE and link it to the advanced science of forestry. Together we can make a difference!
